Mission
Located in the Appalachian Highlands of Virginia, Emory & Henry has devoted itself since 1836 to the belief that education can have a transformative effect on an individual, a place and ultimately the wider world.
Emory & Henry College is named for Bishop John Emory, an eminent Methodist church leader, and Patrick Henry, a patriot of the American Revolution and Virginia’s first governor. Together they symbolize the college’s dual emphasis on vital faith and civic engagement.
Emory & Henry’s many excellent professors make the difference in the E&H effort to challenge students and transform lives. For six of the past 20 years, The Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education have honoured an E&H professor with the Virginia Professor of the Year Award, a distinction shared by only a handful of colleges and universities in the nation.
E&H students seek to actively address the root causes of problems in their world. With guidance from the E&H Appalachian Center for Community Service, E&H students have gone before city councils and county commissions to argue for policy initiatives. They have organized disaster relief efforts. They have written successful applications for federal block grant funds to be used in local communities. They have instituted English as a Second Language tutoring programs for adult literacy agencies. And they have engaged middle and high school students in community improvement plans.
This model of education is grounded in primary principles: Students do not have to wait until they graduate to make a difference in their communities; they can make a difference now.
Location
Emory & Henry is located in Emory, Virginia, which is approximately 25 miles north of Bristol, a city that offers large shopping areas, movies, and restaurants.
