About the College

The European College of Liberal Arts is an international university located in Berlin, Germany. Interdisciplinary in its very foundation, ECLA brings together scholars from philosophy, literature, political theory, philology, history, art-history and other subjects to discuss problems concerning morality, politics, art and knowledge with their students without the confines of departmental structures.

Students spend half their time in mandatory core courses studying common problems, and the other half in electives pursuing more specialized interests. Most work is done in small seminars and one-to-one tutorials. The ultimate aim of all courses is the same: to initiate the students to rigorous inquiry through dialogues of the highest quality concerning the most fundamental problems of human life.

ECLA currently offers two one-year programmes, the Academy Year and the Project Year, and a Summer University. It is a private, non-profit institution of higher education. Philanthropic grants allow the college to have a need-blind admissions policy and no qualified student is turned away for lack of funding.
