About the University
Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, U.S.A., is a public university focused on students as individuals and as members of society. The university offers students at all stages of life the opportunity to achieve excellence in the classroom and beyond.
Missouri Western is located in St. Joseph, Missouri, a city of around 75,000 people with a rich heritage and many cultural and social opportunities. It is about 40 miles from Kansas City International Airport.
Enrollment is approximately 5,200 with more than 180 faculty members. The student-centered, high-quality instruction focuses on experience-based learning and community service. Missouri Western has been named Missouri’s applied learning university and students experience a variety of hands-on learning activities, such as an internship, practicum, or undergraduate research project. The university provides a blend of traditional liberal arts and career-oriented degree programs, offering one-year certificates, two-year associate degrees, pre-professional transfer programs, four-year baccalaureate degrees, and master’s degrees.
Missouri Western’s College of Professional Studies, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Steven L. Craig School of Business offer baccalaureate degrees in the fields of art, biology, business, chemistry, communication, computer science, criminal justice, economics, education, engineering technology, English, French, government, history, interdisciplinary studies, mathematics, music, nursing, physical education, psychology, recreation, social work, sociology and Spanish.
Missouri Western offers four master’s degrees and one graduate certificate. A master of applied science degree is offered with options in chemistry, human factors and usability, and information technology management. A master of applied science in assessment degree is offered with options in writing and learning improvement. A master of applied arts in integrated media degree is offered with options in applied integrated media and convergent media. A master of applied arts in written communication is offered with options in writing studies and technical writing. Western also offers a graduate certificate in the teaching of writing.
The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Program accreditations include the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, American Bar Association, American Chemical Society, Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education, Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Social Work Education, National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science, National Association of Schools of Music, and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
The campus, comprising more than 700 acres, contains six residence halls, 12 major campus buildings, eight academic buildings, a student union, a fitness centre, a conference centre and a learning resource centre. The campus has a large nature study area, a nature trail and nine ponds.
