About Plymouth College

Study in the UK at Plymouth College

Plymouth College is a co-educational school based in the bustling maritime city of Plymouth with the magnificent moorland, countryside and coastal landscapes of Devon and Cornwall close to hand. The school has been at the forefront of education in the South West of England since 1877 and, whilst quietly conscious of its past and traditions, it remains forward-looking and dynamic. Today, the focus is resolutely on preparing young people for the demands and expectations of the twenty-first century and for living in a world which is rapidly changing.

At the heart of Plymouth College is the individual young person. We aim to help every pupil to be happy, confident and ambitious and to value and contribute to the strong sense of community which exists here. Good teaching, with a variety of activities and a high standard of care, underpins our educational aims. You can see the success in this approach through our GCSE and A Level exam results, which are consistently above the national average. From 2009 we will be offering the International Baccalaureate (IB). A globally-recognised qualification, the IB Diploma course will run alongside A Levels as an alternative option.

Education at Plymouth College goes beyond the classroom. We offer a wide range of activities such as sport, music and drama, and each pupil is encouraged to broaden his or her horizons. We feel strongly that those who can balance personal ambition with a concern for others and hard work with a sense of fun will not only get more out of their time at school but more out of life generally.

We welcome pupils from all over the world including Europe, the Far East, Asia and the Americas. Boarding at Plymouth College gives pupils the chance to live life to the full and allows them a head start to living independently in the future.

A home-from-home, the boarding houses are run by an enthusiastic, experienced and friendly team of resident staff. The team is headed by a married Housemaster and Housemistress who are responsible for all aspects of boarding pupils’ welfare, whether it’s comforting them when unwell, celebrating successes or just making sure homework is done!

There are a range of activities to keep boarders occupied in their free time. Off-site pursuits include ten-pin bowling, ice-skating, cinema trips, surfing, moorland walking, horse riding and many more.

Entry to the school is by examination and interview. For further details please contact the Headmaster’s Secretary on +44 (0)1752 203245, e-mail mail@plymouthcollege.com or visit www.plymouthcollege.com
