About the University

Founded in 1870, St. John’s University is one of America’s leading Catholic institutions of higher learning. St. John’s offers students more than 100 world-class academic programs, high-tech facilities and friendly, residential campuses in exciting New York City.

St. John’s has three residential, New York City campuses and graduate centers in Oakdale, NY, and Rome, Italy. There are more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the arts, the sciences, business, education, communications, pharmacy, pre-health and technology-related fields. St. John’s also has a renowned graduate School of Law.

Freshmen benefit from core courses like “Discover New York,” which uses our city as a “living textbook,” and “Methods of Scientific Inquiry,” which explains approaches to scientific research. Through St. John’s dynamic study abroad programs, students can spend a semester, winter or summer break living and learning in destinations throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The one-of-a-kind Discover the World program allows students to earn 15 credits studying in three foreign cities in a single semester.

In addition, all new undergraduate students at St. John’s receive their own laptop computer with full access to our wireless campus network. St. John’s is the only New York-area university honored with inclusion in Intel’s Top-Ten “Most Unwired Colleges.” St. John’s also has enhanced its traditional strength in the sciences through a $20 million upgrade of all its science labs and facilities.

Our Office of International Student and Scholar Services helps international students adjust to life on campus and in New York City. Ranked among America’s top 35 college career centers by the 2006 Kaplan Guide, our active Career Center offers outstanding internship and co-op positions at leading employers throughout the metropolitan region.
